Why You Can’t Just Dump a Mattress in California
California has a statewide mattress recycling program. Every mattress sold in the state includes a small recycling fee at checkout, and that fee funds facilities that break mattresses down into steel, foam, wood, and fabric for reuse. Because of that program, mattresses are supposed to be recycled, not landfilled, and many transfer stations will turn you away if you show up with one in the truck bed.
The good news is that the program means your old mattress is worth something as raw material. The steel springs get melted down, the foam becomes carpet padding, and the wood frame becomes mulch or fuel. Almost nothing ends up in a landfill.
Your Options for Mattress Disposal in Orange County
Retailer Take-Back
If you are buying a new mattress from a store that delivers, ask whether they will haul the old one. Some do, for a fee. Bed-in-a-box brands almost never do, which is why this article exists.
City Bulky Item Pickup
Most Orange County cities offer a few free bulky item pickups per year through their trash hauler. You call, schedule a date, and put the mattress at the curb the night before. It works, but scheduling can be a week or two out, and you may need to wrap the mattress in plastic to avoid a rejection.
Drop-Off Sites
There are mattress recycling drop-off locations around the county. You need a vehicle that can carry a queen or king mattress, which rules out most cars, and the sites keep limited hours.

Things to Know Before Pickup
- Bed bugs. If the mattress had a bed bug problem, tell us when you book. We can still take it, but we will bag it before it goes on the truck.
- Stains and damage. Recycling facilities take mattresses in any condition. Stained, torn, or wet is fine.
- Box springs and frames. We take all of it, including metal bed frames and adjustable bases.
- Access. Upstairs bedrooms, tight hallways, and spiral staircases are normal for us. You do not need to move it to the garage first.
