Mattress Disposal in Orange County: Rules, Fees, and the Easy Way Out

Junk Removal Tips September 2, 2026 by Happy Hauling Crew

Why Is Getting Rid of a Mattress So Annoying?

You bought a new mattress. The delivery crew dropped it off, and now the old one is leaning against the garage wall. You cannot fold it, it does not fit in your car, and your trash company will not take it with the weekly pickup. In most Orange County cities, leaving it on the curb gets you a warning and then a fine.

Mattresses are bulky, awkward, and regulated. Here is what your options actually are.

The Rules in Orange County

California has a statewide mattress recycling program funded by a small fee you pay when you buy a new one. That fee is why retailers are required to offer to take your old mattress when they deliver a new one, and why there are free drop-off sites around the state. It is also why you cannot simply throw a mattress in a dumpster or leave it at the curb in most cities.

Each city handles bulky item pickup differently. Some, like Irvine and Mission Viejo, offer a limited number of free bulky pickups per year through the trash hauler, but you have to schedule in advance and the wait can be one to three weeks. Others charge per item. HOA communities in Ladera Ranch, Rancho Santa Margarita, and Coto de Caza often have their own rules on top of the city’s, and curbside items are a common source of violation notices.

Your Options, Ranked by Effort

1. Retailer take-back (if you’re buying new)

When a new mattress is delivered, the retailer is supposed to offer to haul away the old one. Some do it free, some charge a fee, and some only take it if the delivery crew judges it to be in acceptable condition. If you are ordering a bed-in-a-box online, this option usually does not exist.

2. City bulky item pickup

Free or cheap, but slow. You will need to call your hauler, get a date, and have the mattress at the curb early that morning. Miss the window and it sits for another week. Rain or an HOA notice in the meantime is your problem.

3. Drop-off at a recycling site

There are mattress recycling drop-off locations in Orange County that take them free of charge. The catch is transport. A queen mattress does not fit in most SUVs, and strapping one to a roof rack on the 5 freeway is a bad idea. If you have a truck and a helper, this works. If not, it does not.

4. Professional pickup

Call us, we show up, we carry it out, it is gone. Our mattress removal service is usually same-day or next-day anywhere in Orange County, and the crew takes the box spring and frame at the same time. If you are also clearing out the guest room or replacing the kids’ beds, we take all of it in one trip.

What Mattress Removal Costs

Our pricing is based on how much room your items take on the truck. A single mattress and box spring is a minimum-load job. Adding a bed frame, a dresser, or a couple of other pieces of furniture usually does not change the price much, so if you have other things to get rid of, this is the time.

You get the price before we touch anything. If you approve it, we load. If not, no charge.

What Happens to the Mattress

Mattresses are one of the more recyclable things we haul. The steel springs go to metal recycling, the foam is shredded for carpet padding, and the wood from box springs is recycled or chipped. Very little ends up in a landfill.

Common Mattress Situations We Handle

  • Rental turnover. Landlords in Costa Mesa and Tustin call us to clear mattresses left behind by tenants, often with the rest of the unit.
  • Bed bugs. Yes, we take them. Wrap the mattress in plastic if you can, and let us know so the crew can handle it appropriately.
  • Stained or damaged mattresses. Drop-off sites and retailers will sometimes refuse these. We do not.
  • Multiple mattresses. Estate cleanouts, short-term rental refreshes, and hotel or dorm turnovers. The more you have, the better the per-unit price.

Mattress Disposal FAQs

Can I put a mattress in a dumpster?

Most dumpster rental companies in Orange County prohibit mattresses or charge an extra fee because of California’s recycling rules. Check before you toss one in.

Do you take memory foam and adjustable bases?

Yes. Adjustable bases with motors are heavy and we handle them regularly.

Do I have to carry it outside first?

No. We carry it from wherever it is, including upstairs bedrooms.

How fast can you come?

Usually same-day or next-day. Call in the morning and it is often gone by the afternoon.
