Hot Tub Removal in Orange County: What It Costs and How It Works
The Hot Tub Nobody Uses Anymore
Every neighborhood in Orange County has a few of them. The spa on the back patio that was the best thing about the house in 2012 and has been a green, leaf-filled eyesore since about 2019. The cover is shot, the pump is dead, and the deck underneath is starting to look questionable. You want it gone. You just have not figured out how.
Here is what hot tub removal actually involves, what it costs, and why it is one of the jobs we most strongly recommend not doing yourself.
What Hot Tub Removal Costs in Orange County
Most hot tub removals in Orange County run somewhere in the range of a few hundred dollars, and the number depends on three things:
- Size and type. A standard 6 to 8 person acrylic spa is the most common. Swim spas and large multi-level tubs take more work and more truck space.
- Access. A tub sitting on an open patio with a side gate is straightforward. A tub sunk into a deck, wedged behind a pool wall, or on a second-story balcony takes longer and may need to be cut into sections.
- Whether it’s built in. Freestanding spas come out in one piece or a few pieces. Tubs with custom surrounds, decking, or gazebo framing need some light demolition first, and that adds to the job.

How the Job Works
1. Drain and Disconnect
The tub needs to be empty and the power shut off before we arrive. Most spas have a drain valve at the base; a submersible pump gets the last few inches out. If you are not comfortable disconnecting the electrical at the breaker or the spa disconnect box, let us know when you book and we will talk through it. We will not cut into live wiring.
2. Break It Down
An acrylic spa is heavy, awkward, and almost never fits through a side gate in one piece. Our crew cuts the shell into manageable sections with reciprocating saws, separates the wood or composite cabinet, and pulls the pump, heater, and plumbing. It is loud and messy, which is why we tarp the area and clean up afterward.
3. Haul and Dispose
Everything goes on the truck. The metal components get recycled. The acrylic shell and cabinet material go to the proper disposal facility. You are left with a clean pad and, usually, a spot you forgot was that big.
Most hot tub removals take our crew one to two hours. Built-in tubs with surrounds can take a bit longer.
Why We Don’t Recommend Doing This Yourself
People try. Here is what usually happens:
- The tub weighs 600 to 1,000 pounds empty, and it does not have handles.
- Cutting acrylic and fiberglass produces sharp shards and fine dust. You need eye protection, gloves, and a respirator, not a dust mask.
- Landfills and transfer stations in Orange County charge by weight and often refuse spa shells that have not been broken down.
- A borrowed pickup can carry maybe a third of a spa. Plan on three trips.
We have picked up a lot of half-cut hot tubs from homeowners who got partway through and reconsidered. That is a fine way to go about it, but it is cheaper to call first.
What About the Spot Underneath?
Once the tub is gone, you will find one of three things: a concrete pad in fine shape, a concrete pad with some staining and cracking, or a deck section that has been soaking up spa overflow for a decade. We can haul away rotted decking as part of the same visit. If the pad itself needs to go, that is a bigger demolition conversation, and we can point you in the right direction.
